STEM Education Programs

Capstone Engineering Academy offers a full curriculum program that follows the Alberta Curriculum and has full STEM immersion with a focus on Engineering and Technology. The Capstone Academy philosophy is rooted in the view that students are naturally eager for STEM knowledge and capable of learning in a supportive, thoughtfully prepared collaborative learning environment. Our approach encourages and helps initiate the development of each student academically,  technically, socially, and cognitively with critical design and problem-solving abilities in the fields of Engineering and Technology.

Students in grades 1 – 9 learn the full curriculum while immersed in STEM education for all subjects. Our Engineering and Technology curriculum builds on knowledge about small tools, including instruction on safety, use of tools and their application within a project. Students learn about new materials and their physical properties for use in a project. This may also include 3D design, integration of project components, mathematics (area, volume, sizes) and programming.

Initial lessons are typically presented to small groups of students, who are then free to follow up with independent design and construction of their own project. Students will build hands-on building projects and see lots of demonstrations in the Lab of Discovery. The STEM education program teaches hands-on skills, decision making, critical design thinking and problem solving. Students will build projects with different tools and materials allowing them to reach their creativity and keep them engaged in STEM education.

Here at Capstone Engineering Academy, we understand the importance of making connections. In order to be the innovators of tomorrow, our students must be able to connect their learning to real world engineering contexts. For this to happen, learning must be engaging and relevant for our students. To ensure this, Capstone Engineering Academy has created our own unique topic based curriculum, taking the objectives from the Alberta Curriculum and organizing them into 5 topics students will participate in throughout the academic year. Each topic will be driven by one of our core subjects (with a special focus on the science curriculum) and enhanced by other subject areas, encouraging students to make cross curricular and real world links, whilst being immersed in engaging and relevant topics. Each topic will also be enriched by Capstone’s one of a kind Engineering and Technology curriculum, during which students will complete hands-on engineering projects relating to their topic.
